James P. Rubin is President of the Atlantic Partnership U.S., an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, and a commentator and lecturer on U.S. foreign policy and world affairs.
Mr. Rubin served under President Clinton as Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and Chief Spokesman for the State Department from 1997 to May 2000. He was also a top policy adviser to Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright and acted as a special negotiator during the Kosovo war to secure the demobilization of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
Mr. Rubin was also a Visiting Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics from 2001-2004; a partner in the Brunswick Group a financial advisory firm from 2001-2004; and in 2002 and 2003, the host of the PBS series Wide Angle, a primetime, weekly international affairs program.
During the 2004 election, Mr. Rubin served as Senior Adviser for National Security for the Kerry/Edwards Campaign. And in the 1996 election, Mr. Rubin was Director of Foreign Policy for the Clinton/Gore '96 Campaign.
Previously, he served as Senior Adviser and Spokesman for the U.S. Representative to the United Nations, Madeline K. Albright (1993-1996), Professional Staff Member on the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and Senior Foreign Policy Adviser to Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (1989-1993), and Research Director for the Arms Control Association. (1885-1989).
In 1998, Mr. Rubin was the recipient of Columbia University's John Jay Award for Distinguished Professional Achievement. In 2000, he received the State Department's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Rubin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science (1982) and a Masters in International Affairs (1984) from Columbia University.
Mr. Rubin is a frequent contributor to a number of American and European newspapers, and magazines, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, the International Herald Tribune, the Financial Times, Newsweek, Foreign Affairs, and The New Republic; he is also a regular commentator on CNN, PBS, BBC, CBS, and other networks.
Mr. Rubin serves on the Board of the International Peace Institute, the Atlantic Partnership and Reech Capital. He lives in New York City with his wife, Christiane Amanpour, and their son, Darius.
