Hannah Fry is a Professor in the Mathematics of Cities at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at UCL where she studies patterns in human behaviour using AI and other scientific tools. She is regarded by her peers as a mathematical genius.
Her research applies to a wide range of social problems and questions, from shopping and transport to urban crime, riots and terrorism. She is a mathematician, a best-selling author, an award winning science presenter and the host of numerous popular podcasts and television shows.
Her critically acclaimed BBC documentaries include The Secret Genius of Modern Life, City in the Sky, Magic Numbers, The Joy of Winning, The Joy of Data, and the 2018 film Contagion - The BBC Pandemic (a massive citizen science experiment aimed to simulate what would happen if a deadly pandemic were to come to UK, a full two years before the predictions came true).
Hannah regularly writes for the New Yorker, and her book (Hello World - How to be human in the age of the machine) was shortlisted for several of the world’s most prestigious non-fiction awards, winning the 2020 Asimov Prize. Through her videos on the Numberphile Youtube channel, her podcasts with DeepMind and her long running radio series The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry, Hannah is known around the world for her joyful ability to bring mathematical ideas to life for audiences of all interests and abilities.
Here is a typical subect matter for a talk by Hannah :-
The Future with Hannah Fry
We all wonder about the future and what it might look like. A life beyond 150 years old? A world where computers can read our emotions? A planet transformed by unlimited clean energy? But the future doesn’t just happen, we make it.
Hannah Fry is a Professor of Mathematics, but she’s also the brains behind a new Bloomberg series - The Future with Hannah Fry, a show that explores the technological developments that are just around the corner, and the impact they might have on society.
Hannah has spent the last year travelling to far flung corners of the globe, meeting the people working at the cutting edge of Ai, robotics, chemistry and technology to find out, first hand, the advances that are coming around the corner. She has visited people building companies that can read and interpret out brain waves, those building devices to augment and expand the human body, and people actively working on making scarcity a thing of the past.
In this talk, in her characteristic energetic and interactive style, Hannah will take you on a tour of the technology that is just around the corner, telling tales of the things that are being over-hyped and those which deserve a second look. And she’ll reveal the developments that scientists are most excited about - the ones that will allow us to look 10-15 years ahead and talk (backed up by evidence) of what might lie ahead.
