Edwards, who played club rugby for Cardiff, made his debut for Wales in 1967 aged 19. He became their youngest captain the following year and played 53 consecutive internationals for his country and 10 Tests for the British Lions, including series victories against New Zealand and South Africa. They were the Welsh glory years, with Edwards picking up three Grand Slams and five Triple Crowns.
Recalling Edward's sublime try for Wales against Scotland at Cardiff in 1972 the humorist Spike Mulligan said Edwards was a poet that day, not a rugby player. He was a ballet dancer, a pugilist, a mathematician. He was a miracle.
